Walewale Under Curfew Amid Rising Tensions and Alleged Military Brutalities

Residents of Walewale protest the imposed curfew
To contain the escalating tensions and alleged military misconduct, the Ministry of the Interior has issued an order to impose a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Walewale and its immediate areas in the North-east region. With immediate effect, the curfew limits movement from 6 pm to 6 am. This order is aimed at restoring law and order after recent chaos that has led to countless fatalities and injuries.
This move, based on suggestions from the North East Regional Security Council REGSEC), aims to prevent further tensions in a region that’s already plagued by intermittent attacks on vehicles and incidences of military antagonism towards civilians. Local leaders and residents have been urged by the Ministry of Interior to remain calm and seek nonviolent approaches to address their problems.
In recent months, violent incidents have been reported on the Tamale-Walewale-Bolgatanga highway, especially near Walewale.
Residents have connected these attacks to the ongoing Bawku conflict. The attacks have been disastrous, as numerous injuries, deaths, and car destructions have been recorded.
Military brutality has been a significant canker in Walewale. A notable recollection of military brutality occurred on January 14, 2025, when a group of soldiers reportedly confused a burning truck as an act of arson connected with the Bawku conflict.
The soldiers entered Walewale and allegedly launched an attack on the residents. Many residents sustained injuries, and the community was left in shock.
Residents are not particularly excited about the curfew as it has sparked widespread protests. On February 15, 2025, some residents dressed in red assembled at the palace of the Chief of Walewale, Mba Duraana, demanding explanations from the North East Regional Minister, Ibrahim Tia.

The situation escalated when the minister’s attempt to address the crowd was met with hostility, resulting in the vandalism of his vehicle. Security forces intervened to ensure his safety.
These occurrences highlight the dire situation in Walewale, signifying the need for immediate action to be taken in order to address growing concerns about security and protect civilian rights.
