Zuaragu SHS shut down amid students clash over a mobile phone theft

Two schools clash
Donatus Akamugri Atanga, the Upper East Regional Minister, has ordered the closure of Zuarungu Senior High School (SHS) until further notice.
This development follows a violent altercation on Sunday, July 20, between students of Gurune and Kusasi descent. The said altercation allegedly stemmed from the theft of a mobile phone.
The altercation, which quickly escalated into a very chaotic scene, led to some school facilities being set ablaze.
Media reports indicate that four students have been arrested so far in connection with the incident. However, one of the suspects reportedly escaped while being transported to the police station and is said to have seized a police officer’s magazine during the escape.
In response to fears of potential reprisal attacks, a combined team of police and military officers has been deployed to provide heavy security while escorting students from Bawku back to their hometown.
Authorities say investigations are still underway, with efforts ongoing to restore calm and ensure the safety of all students.
