Uganda Grapples with Rising Ebola Cases, 265 Under Quarantine

The number of confirmed Ebola cases in Uganda has risen to 9, with 265 others being monitored under quarantine, according to the country’s Health Ministry.
The latest update comes as health officials scramble to contain the outbreak, which is caused by the Sudan strain of Ebola, for which there is no approved vaccine. The first victim was a male nurse who died on January 29, and his relatives are among those being treated for Ebola.
The Ugandan government has launched a clinical study to test the safety and efficacy of a trial vaccine as part of measures to stop the spread of the current outbreak.
A spokesperson for the Health Ministry said, “We are working around the clock to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread of the disease. We urge the public to remain calm and to follow the guidelines set by the health authorities to prevent the spread of Ebola.”
The 265 people under quarantine are being closely monitored for symptoms of the disease, which include vomiting, fever, diarrhea, muscle pain, and internal and external bleeding. Contact tracing is key to stemming the spread of the disease, and health officials are working to identify anyone who may have come into contact with the infected individuals.

This is not the first time Uganda has grappled with Ebola. The last outbreak which began in September 2022 killed at least 55 people. The country has a history of successfully containing Ebola outbreaks, and health officials are hopeful that they can do so again.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has been working closely with the Ugandan government to respond to the outbreak. The WHO has provided technical assistance and support to help contain the spread of the disease.
Health officials are urging the public to take precautions to prevent the spread of Ebola. This includes avoiding contact with bodily fluids of an infected person or contaminated materials, washing hands regularly, and seeking medical attention immediately if symptoms occur.
As the situation continues to unfold, the people of Uganda remain vigilant, hoping that the outbreak can be brought under control soon.
