TUC Appeals to Mahama to halt dismissal of workers

Trades Union Congress (TUC) has called on President Mahama to reverse the decision to terminate the appointments of public sector workers made after December, 7, 2024.
The TUC said the mass dismissals of workers and appointees does not only effect the livelihoods of the affected workers but also undermines the trust of young citizens in the country’s governance system. The union emphasized that these dismissals could hit young professionals such as teachers and nurses who have spent years pursuing education and struggling to secure employment very hard.

The TUC urged President Mahama to rather adopt a more inclusive approach, similar to the amnesty granted to security recruits from the previous administration, to prevent the country from descending into what the union described as a “partisan slippery hill”.
The TUC’s appeal follows a directive issued by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, on February 10, 2025, instructing all government institutions to revoke appointments made after December 7, 2024, claiming that such appointments were not in line with established good governance practices and principles. Reports have emerged on massive job losses, including among individuals whose appointments were finalized before the stated date.

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia last week added his voice to this appeal. He called on President Mahama to reverse the dismissals of Ghanaians employed after the December 7, 2024, elections, urging the president to be a leader for all Ghanaians and protect all citizens.
