According to a lawyer, Ghana’s midfielder and former Arsenal star, Thomas Partey, could be facing up to 15 years behind bars if convicted of five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

The charges against Partey relate to alleged incidents involving three women in 2021 and 2022, leading to his arrest in July 2022.

The five counts of rape relate to two different victims, while sexual assault relates to the third victim. But it took nearly three years of investigation for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to gather enough evidence to press charges.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of the Metropolitan Police said, “Our priority remains providing support to the women who have come forward.” Adding that “We would ask anyone who has been impacted by this case, or anyone who has information, to speak with our team.”

The football star denies all allegations and claims he is eager to clear his name.

Partey was born in Krobo Odumase in Ghana, and he rose from local club Odometah to Atlético Madrid, where he won the Europa League and UEFA Super Cup.

He became the most expensive Ghanaian footballer ever in 2020, signing with Arsenal for 50 million euros. Thomas was a national hero, a midfield anchor, and even crowned Ghana Footballer of the Year in 2025.

If he’s innocent, he deserves vindication. This case serves as a crucial test, not only for Partey, but also for the way football manages its most challenging situations.

The trial begins August 5, 2025.
