Muslim thief run to church to seek refuge after failed robbery attempt

A suspected thief in Hohoe in the Volta Region attempted to escape an angry mob after a failed robbery by seeking refuge inside a local church.
After a failed robbery attempt, the man fled into a local church, where members did the unthinkable: they shielded him from the pursuing youth, allowing him to rest peacefully inside while the mob agitated outside.

The suspect, described as a middle-aged man, is accused of targeting homes during Sunday morning services, timing his thefts to when residents were at church.
Inside, the congregation chose restraint over retaliation. They closed the doors, kept the mob at bay, and waited for police to arrive. One victim, visibly frustrated, remarked, “I don’t want him to be beaten, but your face is captured. If you like, come again.”

The thief’s alleged crimes weren’t just about electronics or cash. He reportedly stole food—specifically, balls of banku prepared for post-service meals. One angry resident said, “He’s a Muslim. Why didn’t he run to a mosque?”
One victim expressed relief that the thief was caught and protected by the pastor, noting that without the church’s intervention, the mob could have dealt with him harshly.
The suspect was eventually arrested and will face legal proceedings.
