The Chief of Staff Revokes All Appointments Made After December 7, 2024

The government of Ghana has revoked all appointments and recruitments made in the public service by the Akufo-Addo administration after December 7, 2024. This move has left many speculating about the motives behind such an extreme measure.
The Chief of Staff at the Presidency, Mr. Julius Debrah, issued a circular to all heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies and copied to the Ghana News Agency, which reads: “Consistent with Government pronouncement in relation to near end of tenure appointments and recruitments, I wish to bring to your attention that all appointments and recruitments made in the Public Services of Ghana after 7th December, 2024 are not in compliance with established good governance practices and principles.”.

It added: “Accordingly, all Heads of Government Institutions were requested to take the necessary steps to annul any such appointments or recruitments and submit a comprehensive report on the actions taken to his Office by 17 February 2025.”
The government claims that this decision is rooted in transparency and accountability. But critics argue it’s a thinly veiled attempt to eliminate the ranks of opposition supporters.
While the government views this as a step towards a cleaner and more accountable administration, ignoring the political undertones is hard. The question remains: will this move bring about the much-needed change?
