Sudan Army Plans New Government

Sudan’s army chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has announced plans to form a new transitional government in the coming period as the military makes significant advances against rival paramilitaries in the capital and central parts of the country. The new administration is described as either a “caretaker government” or a “war government” and will be composed of independent experts. The main objective of this new government is to help accomplish remaining military tasks and cleanse Sudan of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The Sudan conflict has a complex background, with multiple causes rooted in historical, political, economic, and social factors.
The conflict is fueled by long-standing religious and ethnic divisions between the Arab Muslim-dominated government in Khartoum and the predominantly Christian and animist populations in the southern regions of Sudan.
The southern regions which are rich in natural resources, felt economically disadvantaged.
The British and Egyptian colonial rule left a lasting impact on Sudan, contributing to the ongoing conflicts.
The current conflict, which began on April 15, 2023, is a power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) under Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) under the Janjaweed leader Hemedti.

The conflict has resulted in significant human suffering, with almost 15,000 people killed and over 8.2 million displaced, giving rise to the worst displacement crisis in the world.
The war has also led to a humanitarian crisis, with 30.4 million people in need of humanitarian support, and a famine crisis, with 750,000 people facing catastrophic food insecurity.
The conflict has had a devastating impact on the people of Sudan, with significant human suffering, displacement, and humanitarian needs.
The international community has called for an immediate ceasefire to prevent further humanitarian crises. The formation of this new government is expected to happen after the recapture of Khartoum is completed.
