Shooting of students forces GES to close Nkwanta SHS amid tribal violence

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has ordered the immediate closure of Nkwanta Senior High School in the Oti Region after three students were tragically caught in the crossfire of renewed tribal violence.

The decision comes after two female day students who were going home after school sustained gunshot wounds on Thursday, June 26, and a male final-year student was killed by a stray bullet during a mock exam the following day.

Following the incident, the Ghana Education Service (GES), liaising with the Acting Oti Regional Director of Education, has temporarily closed down the school.

According to the GES, the closure aims to protect students and staff from the ongoing conflict and ensure their safe passage. The GES has arranged police escorts to ensure the safe passage of students to their homes.

This isn’t the first time tribal tensions have turned classrooms into war zones. The exact cause of the renewed ethnic conflict in Nkwanta hasn’t been officially confirmed.

However, the Adele, Challa, and Akyode communities have tensions that have periodically flared up over land, chieftaincy, and cultural rites.
