Public transport fares to go up by 20% effective Friday, August 8, 2025

Public transport fares are set go up by 20% across the country starting Friday, August 8, 2025.
This announcement was made in a statement issued by the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), together with transport unions adhering to the Administrative Arrangements on Public Transport Fares.
The statement, signed by the General Secretary, Emmanuel Ohene-Yeboah and Acting National Chairman of the council, Alhaji Tanko justified the increment to three key factors that have placed significant burden on transport operators.
Firstly, the council noted a non-corresponding reduction in the cost of spare parts and other goods and services after earlier implementing a 15% reduction in transport fares on May 21, 2025.
Second, the statement cited the newly introduced GH¢1.00 per litre fuel levy for pushing fuel up by approximately 8%. A direct impact on operational costs for drivers and transport companies.
And lastly, the conditions of roads which has worsened all over the country have led to increased maintenance costs for drivers.
The statement also noted that the 20% increment will apply to all public transport categories including shared taxis, intra-city services (Tro-Tro), long-distance intercity transport, and haulage.
The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council urged all drivers, transport companies, commuters and the entire public to adhere to this directive.
