Policeman stabbed by suspected criminal at Lower McCarthy Hill

Crime
A police officer was stabbed in the early hours of Monday morning at Lower McCarthy Hill in Accra by a man rumoured to be involved in criminal activities within the area.
The officer, identified as Sammy, was not on official duty at the time of the attack. He was reportedly taking his children to school around 7 am when the suspect approached and suddenly attacked him.
Residents say the suspect is well known in the area as a regular smoker of ‘wee’ and has a reputation for disturbing locals. According to one eyewitness, the officer had previously confronted the man and warned him to stop engaging in illegal activities. The suspect, apparently displeased with the earlier warning, allegedly saw the officer on Monday morning and took the opportunity to retaliate.
In an attempt to defend himself, the officer drew his weapon and fired multiple rounds at close range. However, the shots failed to subdue the suspect. Eyewitnesses claimed the man had used some form of spiritual fortification commonly referred to as ‘juju’ which they believe prevented the bullets from penetrating him.
The confrontation got even more intense when the suspect attempted to snatch the pistol from “Officer Sammy.” The situation turned into a struggle where the two men were wrestling for the pistol. Unfortunately, the suspect stabbed the police in his right rib and fled the scene.
A resident named Quartey, who witnessed the incident, confirmed that the suspect lives in the community with his mother and has long been a cause for concern. “Sometimes he would show up with other boys on a motorbike and cause trouble for everyone,” the witness recounted.
The injured officer, Sammy, survived the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment at the Police Hospital in Accra.
The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the incident and assured the public that investigations are underway.
