NPP distances itself from death threats against Mahama and First Lady

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned and distanced itself from the recent verbal threats at the president of the country and First Lady by some individuals on TikTok, identifying as members of the party.
The General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Frimpong Koduah made these remarks when he visited the national headquarters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Wednesday, August 13, meeting the party’s national chairman, Johnson Aseidu Nketiah and other executives.
“Indeed, there are certain comments that are made by foot soldiers or even people who are not close to the party,” Koduah said, “but when such unfortunate, condemnable statements are made, it is important for the leadership to distance ourselves and make it clear that this is not the character of our party”.
While he admitted that inflammatory remarks have been made by several individuals affiliated to both parties, wishing death on anyone and even a political opponent is contrary to democratic values.
“Some are claiming that the NPP is behind it, and some are even saying they expected other people to die. These things are not healthy for our democracy. Death is something that shouldn’t be wished for your worst enemy.
Mr. Koduah went ahead to formerly apologize to the NDC on behalf of the NPP.
“So, if anything came from our side, on behalf of the party, we apologise to the NDC through you to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama. It is not the position of the New Patriotic Party, and we never condone such activity,” he said.
This comes at the back of a recent arrest made by the Ghana Police Service of some individuals on TikTok who were deliberating on the tragic helicopter crash but veered to wish president Mahama had died in the crash instead.
The individuals were identified as Yayra, Abiwu aka Akosua Jollof and Prince Ofori, aka Fante Comedy in the video that went viral on social media.
The police are investigating the matter and confirmed the video contained statements deemed as threats against the president and the First Lady.
In the same vein, an Accra Circuit Court has granted Prince Ofori bail of GHS 100,000 with three sureties who should be gainfully employed.
He is also to present his passport to the police until the court decides otherwise, and reappear in court on 25th August, 2025.
