Gov’t directs NCA to suspend DSTV over unreduced subscription prices

The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has instructed the National Communications Authority to halt all operations of DSTV if it fails to reduce their subscription prices by August 7, 2025, to reflect the cedi appreciation.
This comes after MultiChoice’s blatant refusal to reduce subscription prices to reflect the recent appreciation of the cedi against other major currencies such as the dollar.
“In my capacity as Minister, my fidelity is to the Ghanaian people. I have written to the NCA, instructing them to suspend DSTV’s broadcasting licence effective August 7 if they do not comply,” Mr George declared.
The Minister held a meeting with DSTV officials on Friday, July 4, 2025, with hopes of securing a reduction in the cost of subscription. This meeting was held due to the increased complaints issued by consumers about the affordability of DSTV’s pricing model.
DSTV responded to the Ministry in a paged document claiming that the cedi had depreciated by over 200% within the last eight years, arguing that the recent cedi appreciation is unsustainable and thus not enough grounds to reduce subscription prices.
The Minister did not agree with this claim, stressing that the government would not condone price rigidity at the expense of Ghanaians.
Sam George made these comments during a ministerial briefing on Friday, 1st August, 2025. He notified the public on key developments of the government in the digital and communication sector for the second quarter of the year.
