Court jails Mechanic for life for intentionally killing child with acid

The Accra High Court has sentenced a 30-year-old mechanic to life imprisonment for the intentional killing of his own infant daughter.
Abdulai Kadiri was found guilty of this unthinkable act, with the High Court in Accra imposing life imprisonment.
Kadiri and Doris Martey, the mother of the baby, began a romantic affair in 2020. Everything began changing when Martey got pregnant just three months into the affair.

According to the prosecution’s evidence, when Kadiri was informed of the pregnancy, he demanded that Martey terminate it, but she refused. Kadiri still went and arranged for and paid a doctor at Tema General Hospital to carry out an abortion.
However, Martey still stood her ground, leading to Kadiri distancing himself from her. He provides minimal financial support for antenatal care occasionally, often accompanied by verbal abuse.
Kadiri reportedly paid 400 Ghana cedis for expenses and 350 Ghana cedis for her naming ceremony after the birth of his daughter.

The tragic turn of events occurred on June 17, 2021, after Kadiri visited Martey unannounced. While Martey went to bathe at the back of the house, Kadiri, holding his 9-day-old daughter, Muniratu Awudu, poured acid into her mouth.
Martey heard the baby crying in distress and rushed back into the room and saw her child in Kadiri’s arms with a discolored mouth.

Upon repeated questioning from Martey and her sister, Kadiri responded vaguely, claiming the child was vomiting. Upon close inspection, they saw that the child’s lips appeared burnt and her clothing was damaged.
The baby was rushed to Prampram Polyclinic, where medical personnel confirmed that the child had ingested a corrosive substance believed to be acid.
