Mahama tasks finance minister to bridge $156m USAID funding gap

Ghana’s President John Mahama has tasked the Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, to address a $156 million funding gap in the country’s health sector due to the suspension of USAID assistance.
The suspension of USAID support has left Ghana and other African countries facing a funding shortfall for health crisis management.
The presidency expressed concern about the impact of projected $78.2 million shortfall that could affect crucial health services like malaria prevention, maternal health, HIV/AIDS, family planning, and childbirth initiatives.
President Mahama in the letter dated February 11, 2025 urged the finance minister to explore alternative funding sources to mitigate the adverse effects of the suspension.
The decision has already impacted the Last Mile Distribution (LDM) of essential health commodities in Ghana’s three northern regions.
US president, Donald Trump upon taking the oval office on January 20 halted the USAID support which many African countries have been relying on for years.
