IGP leads security delegation to Savannah Region after deadly clashes

Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has led a top security delegation to the Savannah Region following violent clashes that left several people dead and others injured.
The Ghana Police Service, in a statement, said the visit is part of efforts to restore calm and strengthen security in the area. The delegation from the National Police Headquarters is expected to hold meetings with chiefs, opinion leaders, and community representatives on the steps needed to end the violence.
Communities including Sawla, Gbiniyiri, and Giniri have been affected by the disturbances, which erupted on Sunday, August 24, after a land dispute at Gbiniyiri. At least five people lost their lives in the clashes, while six others sustained injuries. Police confirmed that three of the injured remain in critical condition.
The Service has urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies to ensure peace is restored. “We urge all parties to remain calm and work with the security teams to ensure lasting peace in the area,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, reinforcement teams drawn from the Police Service, the Ghana Armed Forces, and other security agencies have already been deployed to maintain order and prevent further escalation.
