Health Minister rewards Nurse with GHC50,000 for Global Award Win

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced a cash award of GHC 50,000 for Naomi Oyo Ohene-Oti, a Ghanaian oncology nurse who recently received the 2025 Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award.
Madam Ohene-Oti, who gained international recognition for her outstanding contribution to cancer care, presented her award to the Ministry of Health in Accra.
In a ceremony held on August 26, 2026, Mr. Akandoh congratulated her on behalf of the government and the people of Ghana. He described her success as a source of national pride and a reflection of the dedication and professionalism of Ghanaian nurses.
“This is not just your personal triumph but also a testament to the hard work of nurses across the country who serve in critical roles, often in deprived areas where doctors may be absent,” the Minister said.
Mr. Akandoh described nurses as the backbone of Ghana’s healthcare delivery. He also highlighted measures the government is taking to improve the welfare of Ghanaian nurses.
These include slashing nursing school fees by nearly half compared to last year, sustaining trainee allowances, and upgrading some training schools into degree-awarding institutions.
Turning to Madam Ohene-Oti, he commended her for putting Ghana on the global map. “Your achievement is Ghana’s achievement. Today, we are proud of you, and this support package is not just from me but from the Ministry of Health and the people of Ghana who stand behind you,” he added.
The Minister expressed hope that her recognition would inspire other health professionals to pursue excellence. He also called for stronger collaboration between government, regulators, unions, and training institutions to build a more resilient healthcare system.
He assured that the government will continue to support health workers whose contributions improve healthcare delivery and project Ghana positively on the world stage.
