Gunmen opened fire on a bus traveling from Bawku to Bolgatanga, resulting in the death of one person, and five others are in critical condition.
The bus was reported to be under military escort at the time of the attack.
The military officers accompanying the bus managed to contain the situation and prevent further casualties.
The victims were rushed to the Upper East Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga for urgent medical attention.
Investigations are ongoing. However, the motive behind the attack is still not known. It is reportedly linked to the ongoing chieftaincy conflict in Bawku.
The Bawku area, known for its chieftaincy conflict, had enjoyed relative peace for about two weeks until recently, when gunmen dressed in military uniforms stormed a residence, killing a woman and her two children.
This latest attack has increased the total number of deaths in the area to 46 since the conflict re-emerged in October 2024.
Tensions have escalated significantly after these developments, with residents expressing fear and calling for increased security measures to prevent further violence.
