GRPTU Enforces a Reduction In Transport Fares

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced a 15% reduction in transport fares, effective Saturday, May 25, 2025. This move comes as a much-needed relief for commuters who have complained time again about the ridiculous cost of transport.
This decision follows a significant meeting between the Ministry of Transport and the Union’s National Executive. The Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Abbas Ibrahim Moro, confirmed in an interview that the reduction in transport fares comes from the drop in fuel prices.
He added that the Union usually adjusted fares based on a one-third of fuel price decrease; however, they went beyond that norm and chose a 15% cut – a move intended to ease the financial burden of commuters.
Mr. Moro expressed hope and optimism that the spare parts industry will take a lesson or two from the GPRTU and cut down costs to ease the financial burden on citizens. He also stressed that the Union took swift action and did not wait for a reduction in other operational costs before implementing this initiative.
He also sent out a word of caution to members of the Union, stating that any driver or branch that does not adhere to these new rules will face disciplinary action.
The new changes are set to take effect on Saturday, May 25, 2025.
