Ghana’s first female World boxing champion, Abigail Quartey, is expecting national recognition for her historic title triumph. Quartey, 28 defeated Sangeeta Birdi in the Women’s International Boxing Federation (WIBF) belt in November to become the nation’s first female world titleholder and the 11th overall in Ghana’s history. She told news reporters,
Despite the achievement three months ago, she is yet to receive recognition from the government. “I have achieved something great for the whole country now, I am expecting an invitation from the President because this is a historic achievement. She continued, “I am sure he’s heard the news, but perhaps he’s waiting for the authorities to make the first move before arranging a meeting.”
Former Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection Dakoa Newman has expressed disappointment and urging the authorities to take action.
“It is very sad because that should not be the case,” she said.
“It is quite unfortunate, I can understand that she will be disappointed and I can even give her a call. I didn’t know about it until recently.
“Nobody wants to be left behind or feel that they are left behind.”
