Gabon Junta Chief announces Bid for Presidency

Gabon’s military junta General Brice Oligui Nguema on Tuesday, March 4 announced his candidacy for the upcoming presidential election . The election is scheduled for April 12, 2025, and marks a major shift in the country’s political landscape following the 2023 coup that ousted longtime leader Ali Bongo Ondimba.
In a nationally televised address, Nguema declared his intention to run for president, citing “popular demand” and the need for stability and continuity in the country. He stated, “I have listened to the voices of the Gabonese people, and it is clear that they want a leader who can bring about the necessary changes and ensure the country’s progress.”
Nguema’s decision to run for office comes as a surprise, given his earlier assurances to return power to civilian rule. In 2023, following the coup, he promised to hold free and fair elections and step down from power once a new civilian government was established.
Nguema’s campaign will focus on areas like infrastructural issues in rural areas, job creation and economic growth and tackling frequent power cuts.
Oppositions argue that Nguema’s bid for the presidency undermines the democratic process and violates the the junta’s initial commitments.
The United Nations and the African Union is calling for calm and urging all parties to respect the democratic process.
International observers are expected to be present to monitor the election and prevent any irregularities.
