Fuel prices in the country are set to witness the biggest drop of 8% today, May 16, 2025, due to the significant appreciation of the Ghana cedi against the U.S. dollar. To benefit consumers, with petrol prices are falling to GH₵13.27 or even lower, diesel prices to GH₵14.40 or less, and LPG prices to around GH₵16 per kilogram.
Petrol is expected to fall by 6.7% to 8.8% per liter and potentially sell for GH₵13.27 or lower.
Diesel is expected to drop by 4% to 6% per liter; potentially reducing the price to GH₵14.40 or less.
LPG is likely to decrease by about 5.3%, with the product expected to sell for around GH₵16 per kilogram.
The cedi appreciated significantly from GH₵14.27 to GH₵12.45 against the U.S. dollar between May 1 and May 15, 2025, a gain of approximately 12.8%.
The weakening U.S. dollar and falling crude oil prices globally have also contributed to the price reduction.
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) earlier said that these price reductions are insufficient to lower transport fares.
The performance of the cedi has been a positive one; with year-to-date gains of 16.29% against the U.S. dollar, 7.61% against the British pound, and 5.81% against the euro.
S&P Global Ratings upgraded Ghana’s credit ratings from ‘Selective Default’ to ‘CCC+/C’, reflecting economic growth and fiscal reforms.
