Energy Minister John Jinapor exposes $500K auction fraud at ECG

Energy Minister John Jinapor pulls back the curtain on a shocking $500,000 auction fraud at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). This isn’t just a simple case of mismanagement; it’s a full-blown scandal that has left many Ghanaians questioning the integrity of the nation’s power distributor.
Hon. John Jinapor has raised serious concerns about alleged fraudulent activities within ECG, including improper auctioning of critical equipment.
He disclosed that essential equipment worth $500,000 was left deteriorating at the port due to ECG’s failure to clear it on time.
He said: “I checked with the port, and the security report I received shows that a container worth about $500,000 was imported. ECG couldn’t clear it, and somehow, someone was able to buy it at auction for 100,000 cedis, then resell it to ECG for $300,000.”
The Energy Minister also revealed that this is just one instance of many, with around 3,000 containers stuck at ports, costing the company GHS 1.5 billion in demurrage. Hon. John Jinapor described the situation as unacceptable and vowed to put an end to such practices.
How many more ‘shocking’ revelations are we going to see before someone takes decisive action? Jinapor has vowed to put an end to these practices, but the question remains: Will he succeed?
The Energy Minister has established a committee to investigate ECG’s procurement practices under Akuffo Addo’s administration to address these issues. The committee is tasked with assessing the procurement irregularities and financial loss incurred through mismanagement.
According to Hon. Jinapor, the committee is doing a very good job. He added: “So far, the preliminary reports I have gotten indicate that there’s massive rot at ECG.”
