Copyright Office Sends Out Strong Caution Against Content Piracy

Copyright laws in Ghana
A strong warning has been issued by Ghana’s Copyright Office to television stations nationwide, advising them to refrain from broadcasting copyrighted material without the necessary authorization.
In addition, the copyright office stressed that television stations that flout this directive may face legal consequences such as fines and imprisonment.
The National Anti-Piracy Committee of the Copyright Office released a statement on June 11 disclosing that a number of TV stations had been found guilty of copyright infringement, thus airing movies, TV shows, sports broadcasts, and other creative works without securing the required licenses.
This practice is considered a copyright infringement under the Copyright Act, 2005 (Act 690).
According to the committee, these violations undermine both national and international copyright laws. It erodes the credibility of Ghana’s creative sector while also denying content producers and rights holders their due compensation.
