CAF Boosts WAFCON 2024 Prize Money, Winner to Earn $1 Million

By Angela Kuffour - Jul 4, 2025
Women's football, Africa

In a huge boost for women’s football in Africa, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has doubled the prize money for the winner of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The team that lifts the trophy this year will take home $1 million up from $500,000 the last time the tournament was held.

This decision is part of a bigger push by CAF to invest more seriously in the women’s game and not just about numbers. The total prize pool for the tournament has gone up by 45%; with the clear message that women’s football in Africa deserves the spotlight and the support to grow.

For powerhouses like Nigeria’s Super Falcons, the stakes just got higher in a good way. If they win in Morocco, where the tournament is being hosted, they could pocket close to ₦1.5 billion (about $1 million). That’s a big deal not just for the players but for the sport’s visibility back home.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe says the decision to raise the prize money is more than just financial rewards. It is about supporting everyone involved in the game players, coaches, staff and encouraging young girls across the continent to dream big.

The announcement has already sparked excitement across among African fans, players, and football federations are all applauding the step forward, hoping it marks the beginning of even greater things for women’s football on the continent.
