Asuogyaman DCE Commissions $800k Asikuma Water Project

The commissioning of the Asikuma Water Project
The Asuogyaman District Chief Executive (DCE), Godwin Bobobee, has commissioned the just-completed Asikuma Home Water Station. The facility is valued at $800,000 and was developed by Safe Water Network (SWN) to provide safe drinking water to residents.
Speaking to the residents at the commissioning ceremony, Mr. Bobobee praised Safe Water Network (SWN), the organization behind the initiative, for its investment in treating and supplying clean water to households. He stressed the importance of responsible water use and revealed that the Assembly is pursuing additional projects to address the needs of other areas in the district.
The Asikuma project, which was completed in three phases between 2021 and 2024, now supplies piped water to over 400 homes, schools, health facilities, and small businesses. Each connection has been fitted with prepaid meters enabled for mobile money transactions, making payment more convenient while ensuring proper management of the system.
Speaking at the event, SWN’s Country Director, Charles Nimako, described the project as a symbol of “health, dignity, and opportunity” for the people of Asikuma. He also explained that funds raised from these sales would remain in the community to cover operating expenses and future repairs.
SWN’s Founding CEO, Kurt Soderlund, also underscored the importance of community ownership, calling on residents to protect Lake Volta and safeguard the facility for future generations. “Above all, I hope everyone, especially children, can grow up healthy with safe water,” he added.
The Asikuma Water Station brings Safe Water Network’s presence in Ghana to 112 facilities serving more than 150 communities. The network currently reaches about 510,000 people, including nearly 15,000 with direct household connections.
