At least 25 rescued after boat capsizes in Nigeria, 25 presumed dead

About 25 people have been rescued and 25 more remain missing two days after the tragic boat capsize that occurred on the Rima River in Sokoto State, Nigeria.
The boat was en route to the bustling Goronyo market carrying 50 passengers when it capsized on Sunday, August 17, 2025.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that 25 people were rescued successfully but 25 more remain unaccounted for and could be presumed dead. The agency noted in a statement that no bodies were recovered as of Tuesday morning.
Onboard the vessel were women, children, and motorcycles to a major food produce hub in the region, Goronyo market.
Nigeria has suffered similar accidents in the past, particularly during the rainy season,s due to poor safety regulations and vessel overloads.
NEMA and authorities argue that Sunday’s accident came as a result of poor road networks, which have forced many residents to use water transport instead.
Strong water currents from a nearby dam have hindered rescue operations, according to the chairman of Goronyo local government.
