Govt denies claim to convert National Cathedral Site to Cultural Centre

current state of the national cathedral project
The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has dismissed reports suggesting that the stalled National Cathedral project will be converted into a National Cultural Convention Centre.
Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu described the reports as false and misleading, stating categorically that the government has not made any such decision.
He clarified that while a continental organization had approached the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat with an unsolicited proposal to construct its headquarters on the cathedral site, which would include a cultural and convention centre, the government has neither considered nor engaged with the proposal.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu emphasized that the organization had submitted the proposal independently and that it does not reflect the government’s plans for the site.
He also reaffirmed President John Dramani Mahama’s position on the National Cathedral project, insisting that no public funds will be used to resume its construction.
“As long as President Mahama remains the head of this country, he is unprepared to see even a pesewa of taxpayers’ money put into this National Cathedral project,” he stated.
He further noted that any future decisions regarding the site will be taken only after a thorough forensic audit has been carried out to inform the next steps.
