University of Ghana lifts ban on all social gatherings

The University of Ghana has lifted its ban on social gatherings at the Legon campus, following an improvement in the COVID-19 situation. The announcement came from the Office of Student Affairs; issued in consultation with University Health Services and Management. The restriction, which had been in effect since June 26, was lifted immediately, clearing the way for student groups and campus organizations to resume their events and weekly activities.
Groups like the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), Junior Common Rooms (JCRs), religious bodies, and departmental associations can now go ahead with celebrations, meetings, and other campus functions. However, the university stressed that all existing COVID-19 safety protocols must still be followed to avoid a new wave of infections.
A steady drop in COVID-19 cases on campus necessitated the ban lift. Only academic activities were allowed during the restriction period with measures like mask-wearing and physical distancing still enforced in lecture halls.
Whereas this may return the campus to normal, university officials are urging students and event organizers to remain cautious and stick to the health guidelines to keep everyone safe.
