Nigeria Mourns: Former President Muhammadu Buhari Dies at 82 in London

Muhammadu Buhari

Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has passed away at the age of 82 in London, where he had been receiving medical treatment. His death was confirmed by a spokesperson for the current President Bola Tinubu on Sunday, July 13, 2025.

Buhari’s political career spanned several decades. He first came to power as a military ruler in 1983 following a coup and governed until 1985. In 2015, he made history by becoming the first opposition candidate to defeat an incumbent president in Nigeria’s democratic elections, serving two terms until 2023.

His tenure was marked by efforts to combat corruption and insurgency, as well as challenges including economic downturns and public protests against police brutality. Despite controversies, Buhari remained a significant figure in Nigeria’s political landscape.

He is survived by his wife, Aisha Buhari, and their children. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
