Comedian Kalybos earns a GH₵100,000 gift after selfie with kids in traffic

Ghanaian actor and comedian Richard Asante, widely known as Kalybos, has shared a heartwarming story about how a spontaneous act of kindness in traffic turned into a life-changing moment.

Kalybos recently revealed that a simple act of goodwill—taking a selfie with some children stuck in traffic—earned him an astonishing GH₵100,000 gift from their father. A spontaneous photo op on the congested Osu Road turned into the biggest goodwill check of his career.

President Mahama Responds to Sammy Gyamfi’s Viral Dollar Gift

Speaking on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z, Kalybos recounted, “One time I was in heavy traffic on the Osu Road, and a car pulled up by my side, and I could see he had gone to pick up his kids. And they saw me. So they were all happy about it. They wanted to take a picture, and the father told them they were in traffic. I watched ahead of me and realized the traffic was heavy, so I got down from my car and asked if I could sit at the back, and I sat at the back. We took pictures; the man was just shocked and was looking at me. He then asked for my phone number.”

The father was so moved by this gesture that he later contacted Kalybos, inviting him to his office, where he surprised the comedian with the GH₵100,000 check—a gift that Kalybos describes as the largest “free bono” he has ever received.

Who really benefitted from this ‘random act of kindness’? The kids got Instagram fame, Kalybos got GH₵100,000… and Ghanaians got a fresh dose of performative generosity.

But let’s talk numbers. GH₵100,000 could fund shelter, health care, or education for dozens of street-connected children. But instead, it lands with a comedian because he smiled in traffic.

Some critics ask, if it takes celebrity clout to get support for street children, what does that say about systemic compassion?

This check underscores a truth about fame in Ghana: being relatable and kind can pay off handsomely, and sometimes, the biggest gifts come from the most unexpected places.
