COCOBOD Moves to Clamp Down on Illegal Cross Border Trade

The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has announced efforts to curb the increasing threat of cocoa smuggling with a planned security-focused visit to the Volta region.

During a familiarization tour of COCOBOD facilities on Thursday, July 3, 2025, in Tema, Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, Board Chairman of COCOBOD, announced this new initiative.

He lamented the devastating effects the threat of cocoa smuggling can have on the integrity of the cocoa sector.

A collaboration between COCOBOD and the Ghana Police Service as well as the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority is set to take decisive action against illegal cross-border activities that persistently undercut export revenues and reduce income of farmers.

Mr. Ampofo explains that illegal trade is a canker on one of the country’s most vital export commodities.

“We will be going to the Volta Region with our special services team. I’ve had discussions with the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, and as such, the Regional Security Council will be involved. We will engage the Ghana Police Service and the Marine Police, and we’ll work closely with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority and other security agencies,” he said.
