Ghana to sentence Chinese nationals arrested for Galamsey to 25 years in prison

According to Dr Hannah Bissiw Kotei, the Administrator of the Minerals Development Fund, Chinese nationals arrested for illegal mining may face prison sentences of up to 25 years.

Illegal mining has long been a serious issue in Ghana, threatening not just the environment, but also the country’s security and the health of its people. The Ghanaian government has been cracking down on these.

Dr. Hannah Louisa Bissiw-Kotei responds to a question regarding the fate of the Chinese nationals arrested for engaging in illegal mining by the anti-galamsey task force.
She said:  “The laws of Ghana will deal ruthlessly with Chinese nationals engaged in illegal mining.

“The Minerals and Mining Act stipulates that all foreigners arrested in connection with illegal mining and convicted can serve a minimum of ten years and a maximum of twenty-five years imprisonment. You would also be fined and repatriated after serving the sentence.”

Dr. Bissiw-Kotei’s anti-galamsey task force has been actively arresting those involved. She emphasized that these operations are not for show or social media content but they are dangerous and necessary to protect Ghana’s future.

Dr. Bissiw-Kotei is calling on all Ghanaians to support the fight against illegal mining. She warns that the law will be applied strictly, and no foreigner found guilty will escape justice.
