Thirty-five people killed in intercommunal clash in Chad

Another day, another tragedy in Chad. According to a government spokesperson, thirty-five people lost their lives and six others were wounded in an intercommunal clash between herders and farmers in Chad’s southwest province of Logone Occidental.
In a statement, the government of the Republic of Chad said the violent clash occurred on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, in the village of Mandakao, located 18 kilometers from Beinamara, in the province of Logone Occidental.

The statement added Defense and Security Forces quickly intervened and managed to bring the situation under control. Also, a government delegation traveled to the scene to assess the magnitude of the tragedy and provide the necessary support to the affected populations.
Deadly conflicts are nothing new in Chad. Chad has a long history of ethnic and land-related clashes, particularly in the Guéra region and Ndjamena, where groups like the Ouaddai, Zaghawa, and Hadjaray have been involved in disputes. The government steps in, security forces intervene, and statements are issued—but the cycle continues.

According to experts, this isn’t just about land. It’s about governance, or rather, the lack of it. They argue that when a country normalizes violence as a means of resolving conflicts, it raises serious questions about the competence and moral integrity of its leadership.
However, the government strongly condemns these clashes and assures that the situation is under control.
