Justice Atuguba Criticizes The NPP Over Their Position on The Suspension of Chief Justice

The ongoing move to suspend Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has sparked much debate and prompted many people to speak up. One such person is retired Supreme Court Judge Justice William Atugugba.
The former Supreme Court judge has heavily criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for suspending the Chief Justice, stating that their position is hypocritical and lacks moral authority.
This comes after a demonstration organized by the NPP as well as some allied political parties on Monday, May 5, in Accra.

The protesters called on the President to immediately reinstate the Chief Justice, claiming that the drastic action of suspending the Chief Justice was unlawful and politically motivated. According to the protestors, the action threatens the independence of the judiciary.
Meanwhile, speaking in an interview, Justice Atuguba questioned the NPP’s reputation on matters of judicial independence.
He asked, “How were they when they were in office? How did they perform? Acting transparently in the interest of the people, did they do that? What!”
Justice Atuguba added, “These are the kinds of things I just hate. That is pure hypocrisy. The exclusion of public interest in our political space is very troubling.”
