SIM Card re-registration goes digital in June to eliminate queues – Sam George

The forthcoming SIM card re-registration exercise in June is expected to be queue free, owing to a streamlined process designed to make registration for convenient and efficient for Ghanaians.
The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Hon. Sam Nartey George made this known during his visit to Margins ID Group (Intelligent Card Production Systems) in Accra on Tuesday April 8, 2025.
According to him, Ghanaians will be able to register their SIM cards online, reducing the need for physical visit to the registration centers. This system will automatically verify citizen information, which in turn reduces the manual form of registration.

This streamlined process is expected to save citizens time and improve accuracy, making the registration process more convenient.
The SIM card re-registration exercise began in 2021, with the government extending the deadline several times due to low registration rates. The exercise required all SIM card holders to re-register their cards using their Ghana Card, which is the national identity document.
Millions of active SIM cards remained unregistered, prompting the government to extend the deadline severally.
This condition heightened concerns among most Ghanaians about data security and the potential for fraudulent registrations through the mobile app.

The government’s aim in enforcing the sim card registration exercise is to enhance national security by reducing fraudulent activities and crimes facilitated through unregistered SIM cards as well as to improve industry regulation by ensuring accurate data on valid SIMs.
