National Security Uncovers Bank of Ghana Cash Boxes at Sapeiman Crime Scene

National Security officers have uncovered a shocking detail at a crime scene in Sapeiman, located in the Ga West Municipality of Greater Accra. They found several real Bank of Ghana (BoG) cash boxes at the site—raising serious alarms about a possible insider connection to a high-level counterfeit money ring.
This discovery follows a major operation in February 2025, where authorities seized ten 40-foot containers packed with fake Ghana cedis and US dollars. On Sunday, during a press tour of the crime scene, Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, confirmed the cash boxes were genuine BoG property—not fakes.

The counterfeit operation was disguised as a simple battery-charging shop run out of an abandoned building. A local elderly man nicknamed the “Battery Doctor,” is believed to have either knowingly or unknowingly provided cover for the illegal activity. Investigators are now looking into the possibility of inside help and what this means for the country’s financial security systems.
The National Security Secretariat is working closely with the Bank of Ghana and other law enforcement agencies to trace the origin of the cash boxes and apprehend those responsible.
