Cina Soul backlash Sparks Public Debate

On Monday, March 31, 2025, a group of panelists on Max television sparked public debate about female artistry and expression by making disparaging remarks about Ghanaian songstress Cina Soul.
In a bid to promote her latest album, Cina Soul donned a crop top along with a pair of cargo pants to partake in a dance challenge to one of her songs. The video garnered much media attention, culminating in its discussion on the Max TV morning show.
The panelists used very derogatory language, making body-shaming comments and castigating Cina Soul’s personality and artistry.
This incident has opened conversations about the double standards between males and females in the entertainment industry. Males have the freedom to express themselves however they want to, but the same grace is not extended to females. Instead, female entertainers are held to a ridiculous pedestal of public scrutiny that mostly does not relate to their artistry.
Some netizens have condemned the remarks made by the panelists, calling for professionalism and decorum in television broadcasts.
This incident has also brought into focus the issue of “indecent dressing” especially on social media. Although the disparaging remarks were widely condemned, several people also raised the issue of “indecent dressing” becoming a major canker.
Some netizens argue that celebrities like Cina Soul have an impact on their audiences hence these types of fashion expressions may influence the younger generation.
Ghanaian musicians and celebrities have come to the defense of Cina Soul after the incident.
Highly acclaimed vocalist Efya, reacted to the incident on X saying: This is so appalling!!! How are you allowing this on your channel?? We just celebrated Women’s Month! Why are presenters speaking in such a derogatory manner toward an amazing beautiful thriving female artist??? why!!!! This is uncalled for and disrespectful.
Sefa also touched on the issue, “This is the reality in Ghana, where female artists are constantly judged instead of supported. Every move is scrutinized, every choice questioned, but this is ART. Art is self-expression, movement and creativity.”
Cina Soul released her debut album titled “Did I lie” and is available on all music streaming platforms.
