COP Christian Yohuno Named New IGP as Dampare Steps Down

Ghana's new IGP, COP Yohuno
President John Dramani has named Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP), succeeding Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
The official communique from the Presidency came in on March 13, 2025, and the swearing-in event is slated for Friday, March 14.

COP Yohuno brings four years of experience to his current position, having previously served as Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of operations.
His previous assignments include Divisional Commander for Accra Central from 2007 to 2009 and Regional Operations Commander for the Accra Metropolis.
He received a Grand Medal in 2012 for his dedication to service.
COP Yohuno’s appointment comes amid major concerns regarding security sector changes under the President.
While no official reasons were provided for Dr. Dampare’s removal from office, sources suggest that his replacement is part of efforts to restructure Ghana’s key security systems.
This development has been met with mixed reactions. While most have expressed hope about COP Yohunu’s appointment, others still think Dampare’s dismissal may be a loss to Ghana’s Police Service due to his hard work and significant contributions over the years.
The nation waits in anticipation of COP Yohunu’s first policy as the new Inspector General of Police in tackling security challenges in the country.
