IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare Sacked, Ghanaians Demand Answers

Sources have confirmed the dismissal of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Ghana, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare. No official statements have been issued from Dampare nor the office of the president yet but he has been relieved of his duties as Ghana’s Inspector General of Police.
The reason(s) for this sudden development are unknown at the moment but civil society organizations are already calling on the president to not take any drastic action against the IGP for now.

Dr. Dampare assumed office as Ghana’s IGP in August 2021. He is widely regarded as a transformational leader with many applauding his performance and describing it as stellar. Dampare is known to have spearheaded some very significant reforms during his tenure. Under his leadership, community policing initiatives were introduced, security measures were intensified and improved and he stayed committed to professionalizing the police force.

He is known to have affected significant improvement in Ghana’s Police Service.
His administration faced its fair share of controversy and criticism. In 2023, Dampare was accused by some officers of favouritism in promotions. In addition to this, there were also disagreements regarding his tackling of political and security-related matters.
His dismissal however comes as an extreme shock to civil society groups and security analysts with Ghanaians generally questioning the decisions. This development has made room for more questions than answers.
