Asantehene Destools Mpasaaso Chief over galamsey activities

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has destooled Nana Amofa Twumasi II, the chief of Mpasaaso No.2 in the Ashanti region, over multiple allegations and involvement in illegal mining activities, questionable royal lineage. The chief, who has reigned for 41 years, was found guilty after appearing before the Asanteman Kumasi Traditional Council at the Manhyia Palace over the allegations.
The chief was destooled for his involvement in illegal mining activities in the Mpasaaso community leading to the destruction of water bodies in the area. The Asantehene said that the chief’s actions violated the values of customs and the law and traditional leaders have a responsibility to uphold the law and protect the land
Concerns about the chief’s royal lineage were raised suggesting that he may not have been a legitimate candidate for the stool.

The chief was accused of failing to fulfill his responsibility to provide adequate oversight and accountability to his community and traditional leaders.
The Asantehene has destooled several chiefs for their involvement in illegal mining.
In August of 2024, the Asantehene destooled the Gyaasehene, Akyeamehene, and Baamuhene of Sabronum for their involvement in illegal mining activities.
