Upper East: Interior Minister Extends Bawku Curfew Hours

Ministry of Interior imposes Curfew
The Minister of Interior, Hon. Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, has renewed the curfew hours imposed on Bawku Municipality and its surrounding areas in the Upper East Region. This directive was issued through an executive instrument and in consultation with community elders.
The curfew, effective Monday, March 3, 2025, starts from 8 pm to 5 am.

In an official statement, the government urges chiefs, opinion leaders, and the youth to remain calm, maintain peace and order above all things, and refrain from violent acts.
In addition to this, the government has imposed a ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, or any offensive weapons in the Bawku municipality and its environs.
The statement also stated that individuals caught flouting this directive will face arrest and prosecution.
The unfortunate recurring conflicts in Bawku have been a major cause for concern in the Upper East region. These conflicts which are primarily rooted in chieftaincy disputes have caused sporadic violence, resulting in major fatalities and increased anxiety in the region.
Efforts to curb these conflicts have not been very effective as several persons, including women and children, have lost their lives due to these conflicts. Hopefully, the extension of the curfew will go a long way to restoring calm and maintaining peace in the Bawku Municipality.
